Behind-the-Scenes Look: Baymeadows Movers Joins Forces with Chipman and OMA to Remove Legacy Equipment from AMC Theatres
Most people walk into a movie theater focused on the movie they're there to watch. They see the giant screen, plush seats, and maybe the smell of fresh popcorn. What they don't see is all the work happening behind the scenes to bring that experience to life—or what it takes when it's time to phase out decades of hardware and clear the way for the future.
Recently, Baymeadows Movers had the opportunity to partner with Chipman Relocation & Logistics on a unique commercial moving project via our membership in the Office Moving Alliance (OMA). As a team, we assisted with the removal of legacy projection equipment from several AMC Theatre locations. It was not your usual commercial move. It demanded careful planning, specialized equipment, experienced crews, and seamless coordination between trusted relocation partners.
Moves like these are among the reasons we love what we do. No two commercial moves are ever quite the same, and that's what makes our work engaging.
Every Commercial Move Has a Story
Among the best parts of commercial moving is the variety.
One week we're moving an entire school before students come back for the new year. The next we're transporting physical therapy equipment to a new healthcare facility. Then we find ourselves inside a movie theater, meticulously taking apart and hauling out equipment that has entertained millions of people over the years.
This AMC project was particularly memorable because it entailed removing large digital cinema projection systems, together with several pieces of historic 35mm projection equipment. Walking into the projection booths felt like going back in time. Some of the film projectors and reels had been part of the movie-going experience long before digital projection became the industry norm.
For movie lovers, it was captivating.
For our crew, it was a reflection that every piece of equipment we move carries its own history.
Great Projects Begin with Great Planning
Jobs like this do not begin when the moving truck shows up.
Long before the first projector is disconnected, our team plans out logistics, scheduling, building access, equipment requirements, manpower, and safety planning.
Collaborating with Chipman Relocation & Logistics, we managed every phase of the project to ensure each theater could be completed efficiently and safely. One of the greatest advantages of being part of the Office Moving Alliance (OMA) is gaining access to a nationwide network of highly experienced commercial movers who share the same commitment to professionalism and customer service. By blending Chipman's national relocation expertise with Baymeadows Movers' local knowledge and project management experience, we were able to complete the work seamlessly from start to finish.
Movie theaters weren't designed with equipment removal in mind.
Projection rooms are often tucked away on upper levels with cramped corridors, constricted doorways, and restricted access. A few sites have elevators, whereas others do not. Moving large projection systems through those spaces demands much more than simply loading them onto a dolly and wheeling toward the truck.
Each challenge has to be identified before work even begins.
That's when experience truly matters.
It's Truly About More Than Just Muscle
It's often assumed that moving heavy equipment is just about strength.
The reality is that commercial moving comes down to preparation, technique, and having the right tools for the job.
Projects like the AMC equipment removal call for specialized dollies, rigging equipment, lift systems, protective materials, and seasoned crews who know how to carefully maneuver oversized equipment through tight spaces.
Each projector had to be thoughtfully disconnected, protected, maneuvered through the building, and safely loaded for transport.
Most of these systems are not only heavy—they're also extremely delicate. One careless bump into a doorway or uneven transition could result in significant damage.
Communication and patience are as important as strength.
Preserving the Building Is Equally Important
While our focus is on safely moving equipment, we're just as committed to safeguarding the customer's facility.
Commercial buildings represent a major investment, and even minor repairs can become disruptive and costly.
When a job is finished, our goal is for customers to remember how smoothly everything went, not the moving process itself.
Teamwork Makes the Difference
Large commercial moving projects are never a one-person job.
Every member of the crew has a specific role, and communication is key from beginning to end.
One team member may be maneuvering equipment through a doorway while another controls the load. Someone else is monitoring clearances, while another team member is readying the next piece for transport.
When experienced crews work in sync, there is a rhythm that develops. That's a skill that can't be developed overnight.
Observing our crew work together was a great example of what happens when experienced movers share the same dedication to safety, communication, and customer service.
A Little Fun Along the Way
Even during challenging commercial projects, it's important to enjoy the experience.
Working inside movie theaters definitely had its perks.
Our guys couldn't resist heading downstairs for a few movie snacks in between tasks on the project. After spending the day behind the scenes where not many people ever get to go, popcorn for some reason tasted even better.
Such moments help make long workdays memorable and remind us that while we take our work seriously, we also love what we do.
Commercial Moving Is More Than Transportation
Most people think moving companies simply load trucks and unload them somewhere else.
Commercial moving is far more than that.
These projects often involve logistics planning, inventory management, warehousing, project management, scheduling, handling of specialized equipment, and coordinating multiple contractors.
Every customer has different needs.
Certain businesses need to relocate hundreds of employees in a single weekend.
Some need sensitive medical equipment transported without disruption.
Many projects take place overnight to reduce downtime.
Others—like the AMC project—entail carefully extracting specialized equipment from unique environments.
Every relocation demands adaptability, preparation, and problem solving.
At Baymeadows Movers, when someone asks, "Can you help with this?" our first instinct is almost always, "Let's figure out how."
Hands-On Experience Builds Confidence
For decades, Baymeadows Movers has proudly supported Jacksonville and Northeast Florida, and we've come to understand that great projects always hinge on the same fundamentals:
Preparation.
Communication.
Professionalism.
Trust.
Our customers know we'll arrive prepared, keep them informed throughout the project, treat their property with respect, and solve problems rather than create them.
Whether we're operating inside schools, hospitals, office buildings, warehouses, government facilities, entertainment venues, or commercial campuses, our approach stays the same.
Protect the customer.
Protect the equipment.
Finish the work safely.
Leave the site better than we found it.
Protecting a Part of Movie History
Among the surprising highlights of this project was discovering some of the original 35mm projection systems that once brought so many movies to life.
Long before streaming services and digital cinema, these machines delivered lasting experiences for generations of moviegoers.
Being right there with them gave our crew a genuine appreciation for how much technology has progressed over the years.
It's not every morning that a moving company has the opportunity to help retire a small piece of entertainment history.
Speaking for us, it was a moment we will never forget.
